John Oliver destroys FIFA

From "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver"

FIFA makes the NCAA look like Habitat for Humanity.

While some of the stuff he says is true, some of it is an exaggeration, the decision to build a stadium in Manaus was made by the Brazilian government and entirely optional.

With regards to the special FIFA courts, while they probably were too quick and too draconian establishing separate courts is a reasonable condition of hosting the games as the rest of the South African justice system wouldn't be able to cope. If you want to host the World Cup outside of the OECD countries setting up special courts is unfortunately probably the only way to go.

With regards to the commercial sponsorship stuff, the same applies to the Olympics.

The part that really is awful is granting the 2022 world cup to Qatar.

I've been very impressed with the new John Oliver show, the episodes so far.

That said, I thought taking on FIFA was a bit like shooting fish in a barrel, and not particularly germane to most Americans.

The reality is that big-time sports leagues and associations are invitations to corruption big and small. Sports leagues essentially are anti-competitive cartels that, if they operated in regular fields of commerce, simply wouldn't be tolerated by anti-Monopoly regulations on either side of the tlantic. Given the multiple billion dollar/euros at stake is it any wonder not only that referees and players end up taking bribes, but also that top league officials end up becoming enormously wealthy. We see this phenomenon in the Olympics. We see it in Formula One. And we see it US pro (and NCAA) sports too.

I would argue the players aren't overpaid of the owners are making big bucks off of their performance.

John Oliver should have gotten the CBS show that Dave is retiring. He is one of the funniest talk show hosts today!

Sounds like a paranoid megalomaniac. Some national FA leaders are calling for him to resign, but he is trying to stand strong.

I would say that the whole system, is simply abhorrent.

Unfortunately, some other idiot will probably step in and pick up where he left off. That's the problem with corruption. It's never just one guy.

It really is a shame that this wonderful game has such a tarnished reputation. Between the corruption/ bribery, the terrible behavior on the field (diving & fake injuries to gain penalties) and the unwillingness to brace technology (too little, too late)... it's giving the WWE a run for its money on theatrics.
