iPad Sales Total 225 Million Units Since 2010 as Apple Claims 'Significant Innovation' Coming

During today's earnings call, Apple CEO Tim Cook shared new information on the state of the iPad, including details on overall sales since the product launched a little over four years ago, recent growth in different markets, and hints at future plans. It was revealed earlier that sales of the iPad were down for the second straight quarter in a row, as the company sold a total of 13.3 million iPads, down from 14.6 million in the year-ago quarter.

Cook said that iPad sales have totaled to 225 million units since 2010, as the current iPad Air and iPad mini have hit 98% and 100% customer satisfaction, respectively. According to recent market studies, 63% of customers planning to buy a tablet are planning to buy an iPad, while half of all iPad buyers were planning to buy their first iPad.

Additionally, Apple noted that 2.5 iPads are being sold for every Mac, as the tablet now holds an 85% share of the U.S. education market. Internationally, the iPad also experienced a 50% growth in China and 60% growth in the Middle East year-over-year.

In reaction to iPad sales being down, Cook noted "significant innovation can be brought to the iPad", stating "[Apple] plans on doing that" and that the tablet category as a whole is still "in its infancy." Recent reports have pointed to Apple launching updated models of the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini later this year, with each likely to come with the Touch ID fingerprint sensor and a faster A8 processor.

The company is also rumored to be preparing a larger "iPad Pro" which is said to feature a 12.9-inch ultra high-definition display. KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the iPad Pro in 2015, but a recent report noted that Apple's plans may be on hold for the foreseeable feature.

Hope he doesn't put a strap on it and call it healthy.

The only "innovations" I can think of are, Apple's definition of innovation is anything that's new, even if it was done before:

1. TouchID
2. Twice the memory, hopefully 2-4GB
3. A8, twice the GPU/CPU performance
4. [Not likely] Thinner display, more efficient panels like LTPS or something new in additional to less backlighting bars
5. [Not likely] Lighter weight as usual but they tend to do this in every two generation.
6. iOS 8 surprise feature, multiple app views at the same time alas Snap feature from Windows.
7. iOS 8 surprise feature, Business/Personal parallel data stores per one app, like what Google is doing in L.
8. [Not likely] Faster Wi-Fi speed, 3x3 AC with MU-MIMO support, which would require a brand new Extreme router to support MU-MIMO.
9. Faster NANDs, twice the storage at same cost.

I think that Apple is somehow going to make the iPhone 6 revolutionary because they're making so many

iPad Air already uses an IGZO display.

I'm guessing Multitasking will be the new big thing for iPads. Especially now with "Extensibility" in iOS 8.

Android offers you so much more convince. If you just apply little bit common sense, you can avoid 99% of malware.

Please don't take away needed and desired functionality to make it innovatively thinner. Thinner by itself does not equal innovation.

Since I bought my macbook pro retina I'm more and more convinced that the iPad is just a fashion that is unnecessary having a 5,5 iphone and a macbook. And I have an iPad Air...

Quoting Cook from today's earnings call - "

2:11 pm Hard at work and investing heavily in exciting opportunities and "incredible pipeline" of new products and services".

Wow - where have we heard something like this before, how many times, for how long?

Nah, that's not innovative enough. Knowing Apple, they'll steal another brilliant idea from Android -- namely, watching two different films on one screen. Amazing and not at all impractical.

That's why I've bought the Galaxy Pro Note "S-Stylus Pro" S 7 running the latest Android beta that only pros and clever people use, (version 19.02, masculinely named 'Sweetie Sugarplum Snuggle').

And it's for reasons like this that I'll stay with Android and never buy an iPad, because they're for little children and tech idiots who don't know real technology when they see it. I want to customise my icons, create silly ringtones, see how much lag I can achieve on a quad-core processor and hold cheap plastic, dammit!

This significant Iinnovation doesn't come with iOS 8... otherwise it would have been mentioned earlier. Maybe this has to do with sliming their products down and reducing price?

According to Ben Bajarin, Apple's R&D as a percent of revenue is the highest it's been since 2006, before the launch of the iPhone. Apple's got to have more in the works than incremental changes to existing products.
