After crunching numbers, just decided to go the Hackintosh route instead...and I could not be happier!

Super easy to get up and running, whisper quiet machine, perfectly stable. Even though I do not have Thunderbolt 2, USB 3 is working perfectly.

I ran a couple of benchmarks as well:

Luxmark (Sala scene, Radeon R9 290X only): 2985

Geekbench 3 (64-bit): 26800

The main components are: ASUS X79-Deluxe motherboard, and a Xeon E5-2680 processor.

Interesting, how did you get the 290X to work in Mavericks as it's only been reported to work in Yosemite Beta.

After having built and used many Hackintoshes, I tired of glitches, updates that broke functionality, etc. There seemed to always be something that didn't quite work just right.

That XEON CPU looks very expensive for what it is. An X5670 (2.93Ghz, 6C) is about $150. A couple extra cores for 10x the price?

Just curious, what is the total cost of your new "Mac" vs a New Mac?

Did you price out going the used Mac Pro 2009 --> 2010 route, upgrading to 12 core with two cheap x5670's @ 2.93Ghz then adding your RAM and video card and having a Genuine Mac on-the-cheap?

The 290X worked (in full res) after I downloaded a driver pack from the netkas website. Running at full res on my 27" display -- 2560x1440.

Buying used where I could, I'd say I have about $2500 into this. I've been using it heavily for nearly a month now, and it has been solid as a rock.
