Went to install the iOS 8 beta (5) on my 5S this morning using Yosemite and the newest iTunes 12 beta, and almost immediately upon starting the option-click ipsw software update, iTunes crashed.

The phone is now in the 'connect to itunes' state, and every time I launch iTunes, iTunes immediately crashes. It will open up and function properly if I disconnect the phone, and immediately upon reconnecting the phone it crashes again :(

Any ideas on fixing this? Would be super appreciated!

Thanks

I actually just encountered the same issue a few hours ago and freaked out before just focusing and using some troubleshooting skills.

  1. Install AppZapper (here) and open preferences to allow the removal of Apple apps
  2. Remove iTunes 12
  3. Delete your old iTunes library information from the Music folder
  4. Download & install iTunes 11 ((here)
  5. Proceed with install/restore of iOS 8
  6. Upgrade back to iTunes 12 in Mac App Store
  7. Breathe. You saved your phone.

Install via Xcode

I installed iTunes 11 and plugged in the phone, unfortunately it didn't allow me to do an iOS 8 update since the phone was in recovery mode after the last failed update. Restoring to iOS 7 now from my backup and then I'll give the iOS 8 update another shot. Hopefully will have better luck with iTunes 11...

I was having the same issue OP. I installed Xcode, but could not find a way to restore through Xcode. Oddly enough....while I had Xcode open and the iPad connected....I opened iTunes 12 and it did not crash. I was then able to restore. Hopefully you can try to reproduce this and be as lucky.

Yeah, this is what I had to do too:

1. Put the iPhone back into DFU mode, let is recover itself back to 7.1.2.
2. Once that was done, start the iOS upgrade process again in iTunes 11.

One would think iTunes 12 would be iOS 8 friendly, but I guess not just yet.

It's early yet, give them time and I'm sure it'll get sorted. Being an early adopter does involve some risk.

ill go and try this, thanks

Just a notice - I experienced the same thing just now, but was able to exit from recovery using TinyUmbrella. That way you won't need to go through the restore, but just downgrade iTunes instead.

SAME - On Yosemite. iPad iOS updated.NOW iTunes crashes

On yosemite,

Started iTunes. Told me iPad Air needed updating. Updated. Then iPad asks to be connected to iTunes, but iTunes doesn't recognize it is connected to iPad.

Deleted iTunes. Reinstalled Yosemite.

NOW when I start iTunes with iPAD connected, iTunes CRASHES.
iTunes will run if iPad is not connected.
If I restart iPad, and then connect, iTunes crashes.
Unconnected, all I get is iPad asking to be connected to iTUNES.

Use a different computer with an older iTunes to restore the iPad to 7.1.2.
Then sync again with the Yosemite computer.

That is what I did, but encountered a weird problem. My safari favorites had 900 to 1000 duplicates of several websites! iCloud efficiently transferred them to all of my computers,IOS devices. Mostly they were in order but some were mixed in.

Same thing just happened to me i used TinyUmbrella to kick it out of dfu mode.
i am on ios 8 beta5 with OSX Yosemite

hope this helps

I had the same issue and used my PC to get the iPhone out of recovery mode.
Is iTunes having the same issue with beta 4? Beta 5 was going to be my first is install. If beta 4 works i will do that.

finally worked using itunes 12

I was having tha same crashing issue.
With the idea of someone to install using xcode, I've opened the last one: xcode 6 beta 6. It took a while to oen because it had to install things and it asked to close itunes.

So, I thought maybe it "repaired" itunes 12.
After I've "repaired" the ipad using the Wondershare Dr.Fone for iOS app, i retried the upgrade with itunes and it worked!
;)

I had the same problem, you can use Tinyumbrella to exit recovery and reboot your iphone correctly

I've had the same with my rMBP and the iTunes DP.
Had a crash with jailbreak on my iTouch 5g, stuck in a apple logo loop, tried all backdoors - so downloaded the ipsw on the mac, and then went with the downloaded ipsw hidden in the mac folders and did it on the win8 pc. (which i hate with a passion, its a backup incase my mac stuffs up)
Hopefully iTunes will be fixed soon.

I've had the same problem. But finally the solution, for me, was simple.
First, i've recovered the the "connect to itunes" mode.

As said before, once you install the new Xcode 6 beta 6, it brings changes to itunes 12 that repairs this crash problem.

So, install Xcode 6 before by downloading it and opening it once.
