As I have an AVI file that has been incorrectly encoded, and looks squashed. I don't want to have to encode the whole file again, just to watch it in the correct aspect ratio.
 
If it's an AVI that can be played by QuickTime, you can fix it in QuickTime Pro. Window->Show Movie Properties, click on the video track, then the Visual Settings tab. Turn off the preserve aspect checkbox, then play with the scaled size to get what works well. You can then save (as a .mov) without re-encoding.
