2014 Android equivalent of iPod Touch?

I realize Apple's iPod Touch is a bit dated (Touch+ anyone? ;) ), but at least it runs iOS 8.

Is there an equivalent Android device that's relatively up to date? The Galaxy Player 5.8 is rather dated, I believe, and I'm not sure it's still being made. Or available in the US.

I need something to run some Android nav apps. Am I forced to just find a cheapo phone without a contract?

Having a separate media player + smartphone sounds so passée.

But anyway, I can't think of a direct Android equivalent to an iPod touch. Your best option is to go for the cheaper Android phones (such as the Moto G+1) and pop in a 64GB card.

If the OP is tech-savvy I'd recommend rooting the phone and deleting the "phone parts". I've done that with a variety of Android smartphones and the resulting performance and battery life improvements is amazing.
