Inexpensive DTP software?

Does anyone know of any inexpensive desktop publishing software for the Mac?

I'm doing a small newsletter, and can't justify the $499 for PageMaker.

you could use appleworks.

or ideally, leave it up to a real designer with real tools....

how is it being printed?
 
Not WYSIWYG

Emacs + LaTeX? Very steep learning curve, but very powerfull. The defacto standard when I was in Uni (CS department at lease).

Appleworks may be an option...or Word.

As for leaving it to a real designer...think church bulletin small...or chinese menu small. Also think limited funds. 🙂

Printed=B&W laser printer and brought to Kinkos.

lyx = WYSIWYG LaTeX

Needs X11, but is totally free. It's been a while since I played with it. Finking it down now.
 
Pagestream

Pre-OS X I used software called Pagestream from a company called Softlogic. Their web site is at:

However, I have had problems running it in Classic. The OS X version hasn't appeared but is at the top of their list apparently.

I hope it comes soon as I've not been able to work as quickly or effectively in any other DTP app. I have a B&W G3 which solely runs Pagestream 4.1.

Have a look and send them a pestering email to get a shift on!

Word is not an option--things move without notice. 🙁 I also wouldn't suggest using PageMaker (unless it's 1986 and there's nothing else).

I would suggest Corel Draw, Macromedia Freehand, or Deneba Canvas as they all are capable of multiple page documents and exact placement while providing good drawing tools. Illustrator isn't on the list because it only does single page documents.

I'm used to DTPing with Quark XPress, and therefore not very keen on the cheaper apps (excluding InDesign)
