Hi there,

Some time ago my mac started to randomly restart itself, because of an GPU kernel panic.
I brought my mac to AppleCare and they told me the internal Intel graphic card had some issues, as well as my harddrive.

Now, i've replaced the harddrive with an samsung ssd. The kernel panic does not occur that much anymore as it used to, but still sometimes the macbook shuts down at random moments (even when there's only 1 app open like textedit).

Now my question is: can this issue be resolved when forcing my macbook to only use the discrete graphics card instead of the integrated graphic card ?

Thanks in advance! :)
Erik

Actually it's the other way round.

Since it's a mid-2010 model, it's famous for the GT 330M failure issue.

Apple used to have an extended repair program for it, but not anymore.

Try an older version of gfxcardstatus; it'll let you force the computer to use either the integrated Intel HD card or the 330m.

Google gfxcardstatus 2.2.1, the last version to allow true "forcing" of integrated-only/dedicated-only mode(s).

In my case, the Nvidia card (or whatever mechanism the machine uses to switch to it) is totally shot - I get from 0-20 seconds of usage out of the machine if the discrete card kicks in before kernel panic, so I'm perpetually using a gimped-out Pro with Intel HD only.

You could try going to a retail store and arguing your way to coverage, but like the fella said, Apple only extended the repair program to 3 years from your date of purchase.

Seems like Apple has done a god-awful job of building Pros with discrete graphics these last few generations... (going back to the 8600 issues in the '08 MBPs)

It is amazing how Apple is somehow escaping flak for such shoddy workmanship! Why does this not deserve greater news coverage? Why is Apple covering the failed graphic cards for only 3 years ? So is Apple saying that they do no expect their machines to last longer than three years ? Really sad...love OSX but it sure looks like Apple s holding it ransom with their hardware....

Yeah pretty sad to see so much people with malfunctioning graphics...
I tried the newest version of gfxCardStatus, but I think I'll give the 2.2.1 version a shot.
Will let you guys know if this fixes my graphic issues.

Thanks!

gfxCardStatus 2.2.1 works like a charm!
No Kernel panics after I've set it to Intergrated :)

Thanks!

Try reserving a Genius Bar appointment and have them look at your computer. Mention in the comments section when making the reservation that your MBP is exhibiting issues related to the "TS4088" article. Or, tell them when you're at the store. The Apple store employee was reading up on it when he was taking a look at my MBP. Then, he took my MBP inside to do some test and came back out to tell me that it is the GPU. He then started to tell me what Apple can do for me since my computer is out of warranty. I basically had three options, which I already know since this was my second time this year trying to get my computer fixed. The first time was in April when I started to notice the constant KP's. During that first visit, I basically just sort of left the store after I was quoted the price for a logic board replacement since I couldn't afford it. So, on my second try, I wanted to be more insistent. Apparently, this means asking for the manager. When the Apple employee told me my 3 options, I think, it was around this time that I asked to speak to a manager. Those 3 options, btw, were, 1) Use my computer as is; 2) $550 for in-store repair; or, 3) $310 for off-depot repair.

He returned from the back without a manager and told me himself that they will take my MBP in and most importantly, will cover the cost of the repair. All I could say then was something like, "Thank you. Somethingsomethingsomething. I didn't even have to speak to a manager." And, his response was something like, "You can still speak to him, if you want." And, I was like, "No thanks. I really appreciate it. Somethingsomethingsomething."

I then did something corny, which was say, "Bye Macbook Pro" to my computer as I was leaving since it was so unexpected.

So, yeah, I thought Apple stepped up to the plate. So, moral of this story is, "Don't give up."

I guess, I'll find out soon enough, if the LB replacement has fixed the issue.
