Rev. B Intel iMac

I'm new, I look at the forum pretty frequently, but this is my first post.

Does anyone else hope the next iMac will look more like this? [IMG][/IMG]

...and hope they'll finally get rid of that lip. I know it's meant to echo the design of the iPod or something, but I just don't think it looks good. Any other opinions?

WOW!!! That looks SO much better. Seriously. Although I doubt it'll happen.

I Really Hope so!!!!! The reason why I think it has the big section of white beneath the screen is because of the speakers. Surely they could invent new speaker technology or something? Come on apple!

Or include much, much better external speakers and not have internal ones. Nice mock-up. That does look much better than the current iMacs. Hopefully they will head this direction.

23" Screen that looks like that will be great. I'd probably go Intel then.

Well, yes, that - and also to hold many of the internal components. If you get rid of the lower lip, you make the whole thing a lot thicker.

What I want is for them to white-out the camera when it's off via a tiny electrochromic window - i.e., when the camera is off, the iSight is invisibly hidden amongst the rest of the white border. When it's turned on, poof, and there it is as the tiny square becomes transparent.

But, a closed 17" powerbook for example is thinner and is basically the same as an iMac when closed, only with the screen turned in on itself. So it should be possible, at least for the 20" version.

Before, I would have thrown in the whole G4/G5 thing, but now... you're probably right. I'm not sure about heat dissipation issues with the larger LCDs - which might play a part - but I suspect the reason they still look as they do is simply because it's best to not change the whole system when you're also changing the CPU, if at all possible. I'm sure future iMacs will have less junk in the trunk, as it were....

I agree, there really should be no reason for the 20" at least to have the lip. When they get rid of it, that will be the ultimate iMac.

Looks nice, but they should also remove a little space around iSight, so make the top and bottom white space the same.

In 23 inch model, they would have a lot more space!

It looks nice, but it will never happen. There just wouldn't be enough room for the processors, hard drive, etc, and still have the ultra thin form factor that Steve raves about.

No. Although I don't think it needs to be as big as it is.

ooooo very very nice. I like it alot. But I must agree without the lip the thickness will increase but then again if its a 23 incher the increase wouldnt be more than 0.5-1 inch. I dont think it will bother most users when the current mac is about 2 inches thick already. :-)

iirc the chin contains the power supply and speakers. One easy way around the problem would be to have an external power supply, but that's Ugly. Personally, I think it would be pretty sexy to mount the power supply in the base, possibly with some ports as well.

Am I the only one who would rather have function instead of looks?

If I designed it:
1) The power button would be in front.
2) A USB port would be on the front (or at least the side).
3) It would be Piano Black, not white (less glare).

Well there is a instance of merging form and function.

But the function you added is well worth addressing, I for one would pay an extra 20 bucks for making my iMac piano or jet black. But I would prefer the firewire/usb to be on the side.

And I thought my 3 ideas would be shot down here!

And I'll admit, when my wife first saw the 20" iMac she said it was "gorgeous". OK, looks are nice, but at what expense?

So I guess some of you know, for example, what a hassle it is to plug in your USB stick into the back without knocking the mag-mounted remote off the side. (My wireless keyboard doesn't have a USB port, like my old G4 does).

BTW, enpojken, I like your design better than Apple's. It doesn't have that "iPod for Giants" look.

A hole in the front of the iMac? You're kidding, right?

That would make scratches and marks more noticable, like in iPods

Lets not forget the chin also serves as a pleasant reminder of the original Macintosh.

Nice mock-up though.

There is a dilema when it comes to the USB & Firewire ports...

If you set-up your machine once and hardly ever attach any extra and periodic peripherals then ports on the side and front would be messy to the extreme.

However I believe that many people, like me only plug in some peripherals when needed. I think there is a strong argument for Apple to add a Firewire and USB port on the side without reducing the number of ports at the back....
