I have just bought a new Macbook Air (1.4ghz, 256gb, Mavericks OSX). I am switching from Windows 7, so I am new to OSX.

Could you please apprise me what is the best ratio to partition the SSD: for OSX and Apps, Documents (maximum amount of space should go here) and an emergency recovery disk? [Do I need to create a recovery disk?]

1 partition, the best practice is not to partition. The only time I will (and have) partition my drive is to create a bootcamp volume for windows.

There's no need to split up the OS, App, user area.

Thanks Mike for the reply.
Should I not be prepared for SSD failure? [I am new to SSD as well]

I would not expect your SSD to fail, but by the same token having a backup or backups is always a prudent move

Apple has Time Machine which is very good, there's also Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper. I use both TM and Carbon Copy Cloner (I create multiple backups).
