The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were subjected to their first drop test yesterday after the two devices went on sale in Australia. While the 6 and 6 Plus fared well when dropped on their backs, the screens did see significant shattering when dropped face down on the concrete.

A second drop test conducted today saw somewhat different results. Android Authority dropped the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in several different ways, including face down, and the two devices saw little damage aside from scuffs. Even when dropped on their faces with a decent amount of force from waist high, the screens remained intact.

It's impossible to determine the overall durability of the screen in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus based on a limited number of drop tests that were conducted under different conditions, but this additional data does serve to reassure users that the devices do have the potential to survive a fall.

Still, given the increased size of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus, it may be advisable for users to purchase a case. In fact, several reviews of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus conducted by tech sites suggested the devices "need" a case, and described them as slippery. The Verge, for example, said the iPhone 6 Plus "works better in a case" because it makes the phone easier to hold, hides the camera bump, and covers "the weird lines on the back."

Apple's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus went on sale today, and the devices are now in the hands of millions of customers around the world as customers pick up phones from the Apple Store and receive their pre-orders. New orders for the devices from the Apple Store will ship in 7 to 10 days for the iPhone 6 and 3 to 4 weeks for the iPhone 6 Plus.

Strange these tests are scientific, how could they have different results!?!

It's almost like the tests don't matter!

Look at the video again, around the 3:36 mark, you can see the screen separate from the device in slo-mo.

Surely it simply being a bigger piece of glass doesn't make it automatically more prone to breakage? Who knows what advances they have had in the past year to reinforcing the glass and what not.
The slippery part sounds like it could be a concern, especially on the plus.

Don't mind me, I am just torn, trying to convince myself to remain case-less as I have since the iPhone 4.

I really like Macrumors, but is this a front page article, who gives a ****** about this.? Give me the toughest phone on the planet and it won't survive even the first drop.

perth guy makes it look like this could be a common occurrence. pretty nervous, but he was doing what i imagine lots of people are doing now. standing over pavement, trying to sneak a peek at their new toy...

I'm rather interested in how scratch resistant the Ion-X cover glass is. Does anyone have a lead?

They won't? How are they magically going to avoid accidentally dropping it? I dropped my last phone a number of times and the last time it shattered the screen, now I won't use any phone without a pretty sturdy case.

Same problem with the box for AE.

You-know-who was very meticulous about packaging.

Guys! Come-on you using it wrong... don't use your phone when standing on concrete or any other hard surface... some common sense please! Only use your phone on carpeted floors as was intended by the designers. :rolleyes:

THE DROP TEST VIDEO IS FAKED!

You can even see the glas panel coming off when the 6 plus hits the ground (3:53), then they cut to a completely intact phone.

Oh and glass flying at 3:45.

Poor guy! i would've been devastated. Come Angela, you're in Australia. Why not call the Perth store and have them send him a replacement? He was the first in line after all.

I was just being sarcastic. These tests don't really have a point. You can drop your phone from one foot and have it shatter or drop it from ten and have it survive.

Could be summed up as "get a case because damn, those lines/camera bump are fugly."
