iTunes Store Now Accepting Donations for City of Hope Medical Center

Apple has launched a new page on its iTunes Store allowing users to donate to City of Hope, which is a non-profit charity focusing on medical research and treatment for cancer, diabetes, and other conditions. The page can be accessed through the desktop iTunes Store as well as the iTunes and App Store apps on iOS, with options for $5, $10, $25, $50, $100, and $200 donations available.

Apple will transfer 100% of each donation to City of Hope, as all donations will be billed to an iTunes account. With Apple currently holding 800 million iTunes accounts, the company has a large customer base that can take part in the donation program.

Apple has conducted similar donation campaigns throughout the past few years, which include programs for Super Typhoon Haiyan relief efforts in 2013, Superstorm Sandy relief in 2012, Japanese earthquake and tsunami relief in 2011, and Haitian earthquake relief efforts in 2010.

Interesting, I wonder who chose this organization as the benefactor of the contributions. Even more curious is why there was no info provided to us. Perhaps I missed it. I'll check the Apple site.

Very cool. Goes great with their new health mantra they launched this year alongside the watch and HealthKit. Lots of big diseases listed here that I'd like to see eradicated.

I seriously dislike it being called breast cancer awareness day. There is far too much focus on just one thing. I would much rather cancer awareness day and a whole myriad of cancers be covered in great length.

Breast cancer is horrific but it gets far more attention than testicular or prostate cancers.

Would truly love to see an end to such a horrid thing that has contributed to losses in my own life as well as many others. I fully support Apple backing this charity and hope enough can be raised to make a difference.

City of Hope is a great organization. i have toured their LA-area campus in Duarte, CA and it is top notch. The work they do for cancer and leukemia research is so wonderful.

Nice, but I wish more research money would go inte to regenerative medicine.

The body will break down eventually, one way or another, as damage accumulates in the body. The only way to cure diseases of old age is to reverse ageing in itself, repair cell damage and replace organs. Think stem cells injections, gene therapy, 3d printed organs etc.

it's not a question IF ageing can be treated, but WHEN. Will it take 25 or 50 years? It depends on the amount of money put into research.

Its because everyone loves boobs :D (well maybe not gay men) so boobs gets more awareness :)

It sounds to me that great Apple Corp is going to receive a huge tax benefit just for transferring money from us to this non-profit org. Well done!

Please don't talk about Apple and tax in the same sentence, it doesn't make sense.

It's also a question of WHO will be treated... It will probably depend on the amount of money in the bank account or of the political power...

Why don't Apple just give them a billion. All that money came from the public anyway. Better sitting in that charity's bank than in Apple's.

Or to include other centres from all over the world, especially public ones. I will not donate for that reason, it is a non-profit organisation but it is private. I do only support public institutions and particularly from my area: EU or those collaborating with EU centres and/or researchers/specialists.
