It really depends on what it is that you're planning to use your computer for. I could recommend Xcode, but if you don't write software, then it's pretty pointless. :)

I'd still recommend it! Playgrounds are amazing to learn Swift and programming! :)

Surely as I stated, I'm new to Mac so I assumed one would know to recommend general use, productivity and utility apps.
But if I ever get into programming, your post is well noted.

Anyone else have suggestions?

Does Pages, Numbers, and Keynote come pre-installed?

Skype
GarageBand
iMovie
iPhoto
Adium (if you use AIM, FB Chat or Gchat)
Transmission if you torrent

I'll try to think of more!

It would still be useful to know what you're planning to use it for, since it will be easier to tailor the suggestions, but fair enough.

It definitely depends on what you are using your iMac for. Other than Evernote and Kindle, the only I downloaded are specific for my uses.

Also, the Digital Photography subform recommended Pixelator for doing some editing on photographs.

Omnigraffle is great but it depends if you have a use for it.

One I forgot to mention: QuickRes

BetterSnapTool will be a great one for you coming from windows so that you can snap windows to the left, top, right, bottom like you would in Windows.

Ahh, excellent!
THANKS AGAIN!

It's a pity I can't go snoop around the Mac store until I get a Mac.
It would be a nice feature for newbies but oh well.

There's an awesome emulator app for OSX that has all sorts of older consoles. I can't remember the name right now but I'llcheck when I get home. Can't wait to play Mario in 5k.

This is a great list, the only real additions I would add to this is OmniFocus and Path Finder.

I actually use Path Finder and enjoy it, but ever since we got tabs in Finder and the ability to move files with a short cut, I find myself using it a lot less, so I left it out. :)

Omnifocus seems really nice, but I felt it was overpriced. I think the price has been reduced since the last time I looked though.

Even in Yosemite I still use Path Finder as my daily driver, just personal preference I guess. OmniFocus is in the pricey side, but if task management is critical to your life and job it's hands down the best available.
