Yep, prices jumped when the 2014 trash came out. Expect them to go higher.

oh wow. I did not realize the prices actually got higher. I was worried that they remained the same even though they should have come down. What a rip off

Is that USD or Canadian? They are $589 at Apple refurb store when in stock.

Sorry, should have made that clearer - that's why I put the 'on sale' in quotes. That price is in USD - BestBuy SKU is 4840689. Open Box price says from $674.

Does anyone think there will be a black friday sale? Was going to get one at best buy. From their inventory, it seems like they still have a lot of 2012 i7s in stock. Most of the stores near me have them in stock.

Very possibly since they put the i5 on sale last week for a day.

At the apple store refurb section, this particular model goes for $639CDN with full 1 year warranty. Goto refurb.me and sign up for their notification when it's available.

They are being sold at full retail because the 2014 mini is a downgrade. Yes, a two year newer product is actually a downgrade if you want quad-core and minimal upgradability. Apple's latest strategy is to piss off their customers that actually needed the power of a computer (vs an ipad or android tablet). Thing is, what quad-core mini customer is going to pay three times as much to get a mac pro or retina imac???

2,3 mhz? it's 1990?

an actually it's MHz for Mega-Hertz. mhz would be Mili-Hertz (a thousand of an Hertz)

The power of any Mac Mini and a Retina iMac/Mac Pro are so different. Just get a MBP, or a lower cost iMac?

Neither of your choices are headless computers. I already have a monitor, why waste money on an all in one disposable device? Don't need a laptop, why waste extra money on screen, battery, etc?

$794 at B&H for a 2.3 quad. They must be running out. A couple of weeks ago the 2.3 was $739 and the 2.6 was $839. I bought the 2.6 since I picked up a 2.3 from them at $739 last January.

If new 2.3s are disappearing it might be wise to get one while it's possible. Best Buy is still at $749.00 though sales tax might make a difference.

Apologies for the noob question - is this particular setup the M388 - and is it the model above the M387? Always get confused as to whether Apple's higher model is the higher number, or lower number?

Yes it's the MD388LL/A (2.3 GHz quad-core i7). The MD387LL/A is a 2.5 GHz dual-core i5 and 500 Gb HDD. Both have 4 Gb RAM and Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU.

Higher number doesn't necessarily mean "higher" model. It could be the same CPU & RAM but with 2 HDDs or same CPU and HDD with more RAM. Just different configurations and price points.

Thanks. Can someone please explain how an i7 has a (s)lower(?) GHz than the i5?? I clearly don't understand the difference btw the two - it confuses the hell out of me. And if you can equate that to cars, then you will rock.

Because those are the clock speeds that Intel decided to make the CPU's, clock speed alone does not give a good indication of what the performance is.

Why does my 1.6L VW engine have 65 HP and other 1.6 L engines have 1000 HP?

i7 have more capacity for performance because of special features (memory cache, hyperthreading, turbo boost etc) but their "motors" don't necessarily run at higher "RPMs" than an i5.

Imagine two cars, an i5 and an i7. The i7 is a 12-cylinder car with a nitrous turbo-charger. The i5 is just a regular 4-cyclinder engine. Even if the i5 is redlining at 7,000 RPMs (GHz clock speed in computers) it will not go faster (more performance, or calculations, in computers) than the i7 revving at only 2,000 RPMs (GHz clock speed in computers).

Nailed it in a language even I understand! Thanks for the reply - and apologies for the derailing.

Scooped up a i7 2.3GHz 1TB 2012 for a $180 discount (the M388 was selling at the same price as the i5 M387)... took the plunge, and think I did ok, pricewise? [8000 ZAR = $720]
