I have an ATV2 and most of my movies that I have have been formatted in the ATV3 Handbrake setting. I format with both Dolby Prologic II and Dolby Digital so files can be played on ATV and iPad. When I play the movies on ATV, at first there is no audio; I have to go into the movie options sub-menu (Chapter, Subtitles, Audio, Speakers), change the audio from English (surround) to just English (2 channel), then back to surround for the 5.1 to kick in.

Why does this happen?

Does the above mentioned scenario make sense? This is driving me crazy.

is your setup...
aTV --HDMI--> A/V receiver

possibly try a new HDMI cable, or reseating your old one

reboot the aTV, and your receiver.

Yes, that is my set up. I'll try a different HDMI cable as I have reset the ATV countless times.
