Can I text European mobiles (not smartphones) for free?

Hi all,

I find myself texting frequently friends in Italy and Germany who unfortunately don't have a smartphone yet. I'm based in London. This costs me a fortune as it doesn't come out of my free data allowance or free UK text allowance.

Is there an App that allows me to text them for free using my UK data allowance?

They have old Nokias.

The first choice would be whatsapp, but since they don't have smartphones...

Do apps like TextFree, etc work in Europe?

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yes I use WhatsApp for all my other contacts, luckily vast majority of my friends do use smartphones :)
