MacBook Pro Details and Images

http://www.macrumors.com/images/macrumorsthreadlogo.gif

As more retailers and users get their MacBook Pros, most images and details are coming out about Apple's first Intel-based laptop.

- OtherWorldComputing posts the requisite disassembly photos, showing the innards of a new MacBook Pro. iFixiit offers a disassembly guide for adventurous MacBook owners. The disassembly reveals that the MacBook Pro's Core Duo processor is soldered to the logic board rather than socketed. This is unlike the Intel iMac which houses a socketed processor, allowing users to swap out the processor.
- O'Grady posted some early benchmarks from the 2.0GHz MacBook Pro vs the 1.5GHz PowerBook G4, both running Photoshop CS. Readers should note that Photoshop CS remains a PowerPC application so is run under emulation on the MacBook Pro. As expected, the 1.5GHz PowerBook G4 beats the 2.0GHz MacBook Pro on these tests.
- OWC posts more extensive benchmarks but you must click on older models to compare the MacBook Pro to their processor upgrade options.
- Meanwhile, the quest for Windows on an Intel Mac continues with some progress launching Windows under Linux on an Intel iMac by using VMWare.
- With the MacBook Pro finally shipping, Apple has officially End of Life'd the 15" PowerBook. Apple had previously stated that the 15" PowerBook G4 would only continue to be sold "while supplies last".
- Finally, another boot test video comparing a MacBook Pro and Powerbook G4 boot times. (The MacBook Pro wins)

ok,

This might seem trivial but...

For all among you who had the Powerbook as well : is the keyboard feel and the way you lay your hands on the chassis more confortable compared to thicker Powerbook models ?

Well, there goes the "It has a removable CPU" theory. That sucks.

Has anybody commented on the "High Definiton" tab in the DVD player prefs? I'm confused by it. Not present on my Mac Mini either.

I can't see the video...it is taking forever to load. My guess is because of the increased traffic to that website that probably doesn't have the bandwidth to support the extra traffic.

Can anyone mirror/upload the video somewhere else?

EDIT: Nevermind, it finally loaded!

...and if you need a new mobo....

Also sucks for repair jobs - the Centrino laptops that we have all have socketed CPUs. We can keep one spare mobo in stock, and replace 4 or 5 different speed systems (since the CPU is unplugged from the old socket and inserted into the ZIF socket on the replacement).

Maybe that's just the "Apple Tax" for a thin system - although some of our laptops are just as thin - but the socketed CPU has heat pipes to a fan *beside* the CPU, rather than on top.

Was it done for design, or to keep people from upgrading after market. Apple (and the fanbois) will claim the former, of course.

i think it was obvious from the start - you're never going to get a socket based processor in a case that thin. not going to happen. nuff said.

I was in the Apple store yesterday and when I asked the guy he said about 5-6 hours I think. Granted that was without Airport or Bluetooth on. I unplugged it when it had those two enabled, and it said about three and a half hours.

If you don't get more than 2.5 hours out of your PowerBook you must have a bad battery.

I have a 17 in. 1.67 Ghz with brighter highres screen and I get 5.5 hours easy if I am using moderate processor tasks. I have my monitor near full brightness level and I have my processor setting to best performance. I can watch 3.5 hours of DVD movies before the battery gives out. I have several DVD's that I used toast to put an image on my hard drive and I can easily watch continuous video for just over 4 hours.

The boot up video doesn't seem to play. Just the Quicktime logo is shown. I wish the ship time as fast as the boot time. I have to wait another 10 days before mine even ships.

In the old days, wasn't CPUs soldered in to save money or make it more compact. I think there is a logical reason for doing so.

Just for a comparison, my G4 1.67ghz 1gb ram, boot time to the login screen is 45 seconds, the time from power button to when the screen first lights up (white apple screen) is 22 seconds.

On a side note, count me in on one of these when VPC is supported!! I definitely do NOT want windows running side by side with OS X, I like windows to be in its own little "jail cell" lol

Apple really needs to partner with VMware

Apple needs to work with VMware to get it to run natively on OS X. VMware would blow Microsoft's VPC out of the water.

Comparison at Apple Store

Went to the Apple Store yesterday, & noticed:

The Macbook display was SO MUCH BRIGHTER it made the G4 1.67 15" next to it, & all other Power- & iBooks look like they were sleeping!!! ( I turned them all up to full brightness.) It was bright like a stand-alone LCD display! (I didn't think the last brightness jump was even noticable.) And I think the resolution is perfect for general readibility.

They were running WAY,WAY HOTTER than the Powerbooks, just running a screensaver or static webpage -- fry an egg, anyone?

I was always bothered by the slight thickness increase from the magical TiBook, & was sure that the new thinning would make a return to spectacular (like the 17"), but it was virtually unnoticable.

The rubberized grip is cheesey.

At the end of the day, if you were waiting on a new Mac purchase now may be the time. Until a couple of key apps are out (Photoshop, etc.) there may be a need to stick to PowerPC, but that is about it.

This thing is fast. Really fast. And the features are just amazing. I am 110% satisfied with my purchase. I am hard pressed to find anything but nit-picky problems. Kudos Apple. This is a BIGGER product announcement to someone like me than the G5 was.

Can you explain this? How would it "blow VPC out of the water"?

I use both VMware (ESX/GSX/Wrkstn/Server/Player) and MS (Virtual Server/Virtual PC) and don't see that much difference betweeen them - aside from ESX's datacenter migration features and shared FibreChannel storage support.

But somehow, I doubt that you're considering a VMware version that has a purchase price of $4000 and a service contract of $1300/year.
