IndieGoGo Crowdfunder: ZX Spectrum being re-released as a game console

The ZX Spectrum, an all time favourite from my childhood, is being released as an ARM-powered games console.

Basically resembling a large, 80's joypad, it plugs directly into your TV and will contain 1000 games at launch with support for more via SD Card expansion.

They claim it will play any Spectrum game and can emulate all models including some of the later Amstrad machines. Keyboard support won't count though, it only appears to have a D-Pad and 4 buttons.

Even so, very excited by this. Shame it's Christmas, but I'm definitely contributing in January

I must admit my enthusiasm has dipped the more I think about it.

Half the games I used to love need the keyboard in one way or another. Surely a keyboard based console with a separate pad would be do-able and more successful?

£100 is too steep. That prices it alongside 'proper' consoles like the Ouya and you could pick up a Fire TV or a Raspberry Pi and make a RetroPi for about £35.

A shame because there's a veritable treasure trove of retro classics on the old Speccy. Such happy days.
