Optical out not working

ive just brought a new macmini. But I cant get the optical out working! On the sound pref pane it recognizes ive plugged a toslink cable in, but there is no red light coming out! same cable works fine with my macbook pro retina.

its got the latest yosemite.

Ive done a PRAM & SMC reset.

Please help :)

I thought I read somewhere they got rid of the optical out on the 2014 machines?

Says its got it on the apple site.

Nevermind, brought a HRT media streamer II+ :)

Was there a signal in the line when you tested it? I've just tested mine, and the light only appeared when I sent a signal to the line.
