I was running VMWare Fusion with a new Fedora 24 VM running but it locked up completely on me. Tried verifying disk, no issues found. Permissions, no issue found. Wouldn't reboot still, so I finally gave in and reinstalled OS X.

I'm not quite concerned (yet) about the update, but, rather, what may have caused the lockup and mess in the first place. I have no software installed in the Fedora VM other than Fedora itself. Fusion is current. 16GB RAM, MacBook Pro 2012 with an I-7. Any ideas how a VM could have lunched this? My Fusion is a current version.

I'm trying to understand your post.

VMware crashed and you couldn't reboot or boot up OS X after this, you then reinstalled OS X.

Prior to reinstalling OSX, did you look at the console logs or see what the error messages?

I've been running VMware for years and never had anything close to what you're dealing with
