i am also currently looking into getting an SSD for my mid 2012. A few months ago i was about to get the 840 EVO but then i saw that people were having problems with a bug. i believe there is now a simple fix for the bug but it has put me off getting one.

damn i'm doomed, my firmware is really old (ext0bb0q) and updating is a PITA as I don't have the superdrive anymore... you sir ruined my day thanks 
why on earth those guys don't make something that runs inside the OS like they do for windows is beyond me. a simple cmdline thing would work.

Look at post #65 on in this thread. Some have been able to work it out on a bootable USB key.
