At least the 2014 does have a better integrated GPU and PCIe SSD slot.

In fact, the $589 deal on the mid-range 2.6 I5 would reflect the cost to swap the HDD with an SSD. If you could live with 8 gig RAM - and many can and do quite happily - you'd end up with a pretty capable computer.

Yep. That's exactly what I did. I got a hot deal on an open box 2014 Mid-Mini for about that same cost and swapped in a 250GB Samsung 840 EVO I had and I'm quite happy with it.

Considering both my rMBP and my MBA both have 8GB and we've been just fine with those, I figure this one will do fine as well. Granted my 2012 quad cores both have 16GB of RAM, but it is quite apparent that upgrading your own Mac is past us now....
