Poll: M295X GPU heat in Valley benchmark

Hi,

There are varying reports about the M295X chip and the amount of heat/throttling that occurred with this chip.

I want to conduct the closest thing we can have to a poll of a mass population to check this issue.

Here's how:

1. Download Valley Benchmark from here: https://unigine.com/products/valley/download/
2. Close all other applications.
3. Choose the Extreme HD preset.
4. Click run, then settings.
5. In the settings pane, set the following:

6. Click on Benchmark. Let the benchmark run for at least 10 minutes.
7. Mark the GPU heat in the poll.

Mine was mostly 102 degrees, after 10 minutes it reached 104. When I quit, the fans were at 2300 rpm. Please share your fan RPM if you have that information (Using iStat)

Flickered to 105º once or twice, but for less than half a second so not enough for me to warrant that value. Reached 104º very quickly.

FPS between about 15 and 30, definitely didn't see any single value figures.

100ºC (occasionally flickers to 101º)

FPS between 11 and 30
Fan speed: not sure, but it's spinning at its loudest, so I'd assume 2300rpm like everyone else's.

This is for a M295X GPU + 4GHz i7 + 1TB SSD only

Also worthy of note:
Room temp: 19ºC (ambient temp may have an effect)

I'm also using an SSD only (no spinning hard drive) which may help keep temps down inside the iMac's case.

After 15 minutes, it was hovering between 98 and 100, with very short blips to 101 periodically. I would say the average was ~99

I have the VESA mount model, which blocks the ventilation a little, so I am a bit surprised.

This is really surprising! You might have gotten the "good thermal paste" edition

Are you sure you used the exact same settings as in the screenshot in the first thread? mainly 8X Anti Aliasing, 2560x1440 resolution, no VSYNC?

As Sunday Ironfoot included, ambient temperature would also be useful to include, it would be interesting to see if those in the Southern Hemisphere report even higher temps due to hot summer weather.

I would say the temperature was probably also around 20 Celsius.

I couldn't enable motion blur on my copy of that app...

However, it stayed at 99° C, 17-42 fps, ambient 21° C. 1800 RPM

The maximum safe operating temperature for the card is 105C. The fact that these iMacs are letting it reach higher than this tells me there's a problem here.

You're right, though, in humid/hot rooms the problem will be magnified.

99 - 100C, 2298rpm, 15-45fps

Retina iMac
4GHz i7
m295x
32GB ram
1TB SSD

This iMac was from the very first shipment to the US after release. I have never had thermal or fan issues with it. Possibly the first production units were under Apple Engineering supervision and had proper thermal-past application ... then they got sloppy?

When quitting the demo/test, the temps and fan very quickly (15 sec) return to normal (using iStatMenus). I can feel the fan putting out heat, but I can't really hear it very well with the music off.

How do we know the GPU is really at 105C? On my 2013 iMac the GPU die temperature reported by iStat Menus is 8 to 10C lower than the GPU temperature reported by the Valley Benchmark. Which is the correct indicator of GPU temp? Until this is known I don't see how judgements can be made.

I get the same temperatures on iStat, iStat pro, Valley and HWMonitor on Windows. Only exception is that I got the GPU to 108C on Windows.

Edit: Does anyone know of any GPU clock speed monitoring apps that don't mess with various kexts? I think the throttling would be a tell-tale of a flawed product. More relevant than just monitoring heat/fans.

So I did a benchmark starting at a 50C GPU diode, followed by one at starting at 104C.

These are the results below.

Throttling? Not sure - 3.5% drop in performance.

Up the resolution to 2560x1440. You need to click 'run' then edit the settings after it starts.

Same here on a late 2013 with 780M: 10°C higher on the Valley Benchmark.

Just out of curiosity I decided to run this benchmark on my 2013 iMac i5 3.4 nVidia 775M with all the same settings you guys suggested.

GPU temp according to the program hovered around 80c (82c max) so the fan never increased from 1200rpm.

That I don't find surprising. What I do find surprising is the results of FPS and score. Shouldn't you guys be in an entirely different ballpark? Did I test something incorrectly?

EDIT : I obviously didnt take part in the poll as I don't have a 5k iMac FYI. Also to point out I've had the GPU get much hotter with games (ESO 95c), so if you guys are seeing throttling with this benchmark I'd imagine you'd certainly see it real world.
