The Inateck USB 3.0 Hard Drive Docking Station is an enclosure designed for ease of use when working with 2.5" & 3.5" SATA drives with its tool less operation.

Included in the package is the disk enclosure, a USB 3.0 cable, a power supply and an adhesive pad. Construction is of plastic which initially is a disappointment but in truth, with a drive inside the unit feels solid and I didn't encounter any issues with the construction during my testing.

Using this caddy is simplicity itself, it employs a simple click and slide mechanism to pull out the top cover to insert your drive. The case fits a 3.5" drive perfectly with no looseness or rattling at all but since 2.5" drives share the same interface, these are also supported with obvious room to spare. With the drive in place, you just slide the top cover back into place with a click. To swap out a drive, you simply reverse these instructions and the whole exercise only takes a couple of seconds. On the end of the unit is a power switch, power supply connector and the USB port. On top are LEDs indicating both power and disk activity.

This enclosure is powered by a chipset that offers true USB 3.0 connectivity meaning that greater performance of your drive should be realised - mechanical drives such as the one I tested with will unlikely show the true benefit but SSD drives should show a big improvement over less well specified drive enclosures.
UASP support is also included to make the most of a USB 3.0 and SSD combination and this feature is supported by recent versions of Mac, Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
Automatic power saving features are also at play and the enclosed drive will enter sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity.

USB external disk enclosures are usually fairly simple in what they offer but this product from Inateck offers both great performance as well as easy operation for the user, especially if you need to switch out drives fairly regularly. If you are looking for an inexpensive and flexible USB caddy for both 2.5" & 3.5" SATA drives then it's hard not to recommend this.
