Cool! I totally forgot about that card, never had one in any G5 I got.

Openmark is really good about benchmarking only the vid card and ignoring the rest of the system.

I tried the x850xl in a dual 2.0 and dual 2.7 and got the exact same number.

Well this post inspired me to fire up my dual 1.42GHz MDD and benchmark my 9800 Pro... aaand it's dead. Power button glows when I press it, occasionally the fan tries to spin for a second. If I hold the button down, I can get all the way to the bong before power cuts.

Guess it's time to look into an ATX conversion.. hopefully I can find a decent mini-itx PSU that will fit easily.

Got my MDD back up and running; ended up getting the PSU refurbished by the guy on eBay. Definitely recommended, by the way.

Anyways, here's my Openmark score:

PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42GHz with Radeon 9800 Pro --- 8719

About what I expected. This is a 128MB Radeon 9800 Pro PC card, flashed with one of the reduced-size Mac BIOSes.

Interesting 9800 is only slightly faster than a 9700. Was wondering about that.

Yeah I noticed that. What I don't get though is your x850xt beating my x1950xt. That doesn't seem like it should be possible; looking at forum posts from back in the day by people who jumped from the x850xt to the x1950xt, it was a pretty big upgrade.

Remember that macs use OpenGL, and PC's use DirectX.

The 19xx series might have been hugely faster at directx, but not so good at opengl.. thats my guess.

Could also be the quality of mac drivers, maybe they just didnt properly make use of the newer cards.

Posted result picture. It says x800 engine, but its the apple x850xt:
Apple_x850xt_OpenMark16.jpg

Whats scary, is there were 2 x800 series cards faster than this one. The x800xt-pe was faster than the x850xt, and the x850xt-pe was faster still, I would love to see one of those flashed to run at its proper speed in a G5.

Just in case anyone's interested in how some of these cards compare to newer integrated chipsets, I ran the benchmark on my Early 2008 MacBook with Intel GMA X3100 integrated graphics. The results were... not pretty lol.

That brings my results list to the following:
MacBook 2.4GHz Penryn with Intel GMA X3100 ----------- 1843
PowerMac G4 MDD Dual 1.42GHz with Radeon 9800 Pro --- 8719
PowerMac G5 2.3GHz Dualcore with Radeon X1950XT ---- 16040

Any interest in testing the GeForce 4600Ti in my other MDD? I'll have to lug it up from the basement.

2013 MacBook Air: 25575
Quad G5 w/ Quadro FX 4500: 15769

Might have to test again with the same resolution so that they are on equal footing.

Just for the heck of it, here's what may be the lowest score reported(or will be reported) in this thread for a discrete graphics card. This is a PCI Rage 128 installed in my Xserve. It gives a score of 259.

You can use any x1900 card. I really recommend you use only the models with the two slot cooler as they are much quieter. The only issue is that the device id might have to be edited to fit your card. The Rom is pretty hard to find but I found the Rom used for a few of the x1950 and edited it for my x1900 I just need a pc to flash it again as I messes up the device id...

Radeon 8500 in a 2x AGP Sawtooth.

I think this is a 2x/4x card, so will try it again in a 4x system and see if the results are different.
