I have a Dell 4K connected at 3840*2160. The monitor is a cheap one and only support 30hrz at full resolution but for documents its fine. Text is small even on this 29" display

Does anyone have any more experience with 4K monitor w/ 2011 imac?

I am looking to see if it will support 60hz for 4k external monitor.

I have AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MB..

This article from Apple would indicate there might be an issue on the 2011 iMacs

4K Ultra HD TVs are supported over HDMI or with Thunderbolt to high-speed HDMI adapters. Thunderbolt 2 is required to use a 4K display. All Thunderbolt 2 models support 4K displays at 30Hz in Single Stream Transport mode. Some models support 4K displays at 60 Hz in Multi Stream Transport mode. See HT6008 for more information on using 4K displays. Specific 4K DisplayPort displays are supported on Thunderbolt with a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable.

Nope.

It's simple : if you have 1st gen. Thunderbolt, it's limited to 2160p30.

Anyone know if a mid 2011 27" iMac with AMD Radeon HD 6970M w/ 2GB video memory will drive a 4K display at 2560 x 1440 in either extended desktop or mirrored?

On the Display Port input of the Monitor:
Extended mode:

It will drive the 4k display at 4k@30Hz (max limit of the displayport)

Mirrored mod:
It will drive the 4k display at 1440p@60Hz (comfortable support from display port)

HDMI port:
If you connect the display via miniDP to HDMI cable, check the support mode of the cable. Some only support up to 1080p, some can drive 4K@30Hz, only a few can drive 4K@60Hz.

You'd better use a single cable, not adapter + cable.

USB-C port: Not try yet. No direct cable available.

Hello there, I'm struggling with similar issue with my 21.5 inch 2011 iMac, the only difference is that I can't even get 2560x1440 on 25" display. On miniDP-hdmi cable and same type adapter I only got 1080p. Strangly or not three DP cables I tried won't work at all. I have tried miniDP-miniDP, and 2 different miniDP-DP cables. One of them is actively used by my colleague on 2014 Mac Book (with thunderbolt 2) with success. After tried so many options I pretty sure that first gen thunderbolt need kinda special cable with additional electronic inside, or the only option is to hunt for better quality miniDP-HDMI cable. Maybe someone can guide me for good quality cable of that type? Thanks a lot!
