Amazing question. Ummm... let's see...

Is it possible that any of the following are being stored on your iPod in mass quantities:

Files
Contacts
Pornography

Sorry, I had to add that last one in there just for fun. You might be storing files or something and not know it. Put it in to HD mode and go exploring. Good luck.

just reset it using the ipod updater. that happened to my 40 gig 4th gen once. I had 15 gigs of music on it and nothing else (no pr0n :p) and it said i only had 3 gigs available...but anyway, resetting it with the ipod updater should fix the problem

On a Mac, if you drag a file to the Trash from an iPod (assuming you're using it as an external drive), then you don't actually get that space back until you Empty The Trash. Could it have been this? :)
