So I just got my MacBook a few hours ago and am noticing some strange SSD behavior, specifically slower speeds than my Fusion iMac in installing apps and I'm not sure what's going on. I thought we should be seeing read speeds in excess of 1k but instead I'm getting the attached when using Blackmagic. Apps seem to launch okay but it all doesn't seem any faster than my iMac.

My unit is a 1.2 GHz 512GB SSD. Any similar issues?

Write speed seems very slow. Yosemite does a lot of indexing and maintenance in the background during the first day or so. I wonder if that's responsible for the results you got.

I'm going to keep an eye on it and report back but it was just surprising because usually installs are blazing fast on my SSD machines. We shall see...

FileVault shouldn't have anywhere near that impact unless it is in the process of encrypting. I have had FileVault set up on my rMBP and get speeds far faster than your read speed.

I do not own a MacBook but those numbers seem pretty slow. Here's my reads from my 2015 11" Air.

MacBook Air (11-inch, Early 2015)
Processor Intel i7 2.2 Ghz Dual-Core
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
SSD APPLE 512 GB SSD SM0512G Media

Those are actually about 2x too high for anything other than the 2015 models with the 4-lane PCI-e. The rMB has 2-lane, but it should be roughly half of that, not the very slow read speeds the OP shows.

I just ran my 1.2/512. I got around 450mb/s read and 790mb/s write.

No way those results are correct. Here's my results:

MacBook Pro Retina 2012
Intel Core i7 2.7GHz
16GB Ram 1600MHz DDR3
512GB Storage Apple SSD SM215E

OP, what version of OS X are you running?

My base gold is having the same issue. I enabled FV2 during setup but disabled it after originally seeing these speeds. Checked activity monitor to verify no apps are stressing out the SSD when running the test. Very odd behavior.

Check my speeds above. Those are with FV2.

I seem to have fixed it by booting into the recovery partition, opening Disk Utility, first "Repair Disk" then "Repair Disk Permissions" on the partition itself. The Disk Repair resized the partition and repaired a couple other things and a few permissions were repaired in the library. Getting normal speeds now!

Glad it's resolved, too bad to have to go to the trouble. :-/ I solved the problem by preemptively reinstalling OS X via Internet Recovery after erasing the disk! Shouldn't have to do that but with nothing installed it really wasn't a big deal.

To those getting the low numbers, what happens when you leave it running for 3-5 minutes?

I got the full speed even after FV2. Then this morning I thought I'd check after reading a thread here and sure enough I was posting only around 50 read/write. Then I noticed that if I left it running it would get faster and faster after each cycle, topping off at the screenshot below.

I also noticed that each read/write cycle completes very fast. The Black Magic app transfers 5GB or times out at 8 sec whichever comes first. The fact I was seeing it cycle between read and write every 2 seconds tells me something is not right with the app itself.

Bottom line, I think your machines are fine and not cause for concern.
