OS X Mail app broken

Ok, I updated a few days ago (some system update that was a security update). Since then my Mail app has been very spotty. I open it, and it just hangs, doesn't display any emails in any of the windows, and I get the spinning beach ball. I force it closed and reopen and then it works?? Next time it may hang again. This time I opened it up, and only email is displayed from one account, and none of the other email accounts. I have deleted a few things in the library and I don't remember what, and it seemed to help, but hasn't fixed the issue. I would really appreciate some help in how to fix it. I'm sure it is preferences or something of that nature in the Library that didn't go well with the update. Or perhaps passwords for the account? I haven't changed my email passwords so only the update messed something up.

Ok, I would be happy if someone could just easily explain to me the best way to completely reset the Mail app, without losing too much of my stuff. All my mail is setup as imap, so all the mail is located on the server. I could just re-download it all though that is less than optimal. I just really need to be able to use my email on my computer.

Solved... I think.

Well, I totally reset my Keychain access. I opened the Keychain app, Selected File -> Preferences -> and in the first tab/box it says reset keychain. That is what I did. I had to re-enter all my passwords and setup my outgoing servers again, but this seems to have helped a lot. I didn't have to do anything else. I hope this helps someone else struggling with the same thing!

If it doesn't work as a long-term solution, you may want to copy the plist.preference file within the Library for mail.app as a backup of preferences, and then use the MAC OS X install DVD or partition to reinstall Mail.app, which will install a new copy and purge the existing one.

Thanks for this info! It actually was only a temporary solution. Going to have to completely get rid of all Mail preferences and try to get this fixed. This has been going on for a week now, and I simply don't have time to mess around with it. Quite frustrated... I'm thinking I may just install Mozilla Thunderbird.

Ok, kind of perturbed. I removed: ~/Liibrary/Mail as well as: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and it is still broken. Thunderbird is installed and running in it's place except for my iCloud account. I guess that is the way it will be till Apple fixes it. Seems to stem from one of their updates and now it is a real mess.

Ok, I still need help, I cannot even configure Mail app to check my iCloud account. It is totally broken. I have moved my other three accounts to Thunderbird, but cannot figure out how to get iCloud to work with Thunderbird. I would like to have the Mail app fixed because there are a few things that I have really grown to like about it... auto recognition of what language I'm typing in for one.
