How France Is Saving Civilization

Category: Opinion/Interviews
Link: How France Is Saving Civilization
Description:: New legislation in France would force Apple Computer to open the iPod and iTunes to competitors -- and that's a good thing for consumers, in the long run.

that what I was gathering off the law. it the the apple fans that are thinking it only going after apple.

If you read it all the states is for a music store to work in france it going to have to be able to work on the players sold there and players work with the other music store.

So a creative zen will be able to play stuff from iTMS and iPod will be able to play stuff from napster.

Mind you if apple pulls out then the iPod get effect in france as well.

I can't find anything to object to here.

As an Apple fan, and happy iTMS consumer, I'd like to be able to say I find this legislation unfair and objectionable. But it's not. It's just good government.

There's nothing here to stop Apple (or anyone else) from making a better product and dominating the market. It just prevents Apple (or anyone else) from dominating the market because they got there first. As long as Apple keeps providing a better product, they have nothing to fear.

This is the kind of legislation that would've been passed in the U.S.A. back in the old-days, when the US was the 'land of the free', rather than the 'home of the corporation.'

Cheers

I agree that this should have been passed long ago in many places, but I think the belief that digital download music sales were too 'fragile' until now has prevented much action being taken.

It's crazy that because I have a Walkman I can't buy from iTunes or Napster. It blows my mind that it has taken France to speak out!

What?

How can the French save civilization, when they can't save themselves? They stand by while thugs burn thousands of cars, mutilate and murder people because they're Christian, and generally don't have the balls to crack some skulls and bring order to an ever-growing segment of European society that has brought chaos, disorder, and hatred back to Europe?!

For over two thousand years, Europe has been Christian, and now because a few witty cartoons appear here and there that have more truth than anything, people are in an uproar?!

WTF?!

Getting wwaaay of topic, however:

As opposed to your country that illegally invades other countries to get at its natural resources, i.e., Oil, under the guise of WMD and other kinds of BS?!

Also one that loves democracy, as long as its on the u.s terms?!

Not forgetting that under 50% of americans have actually left their own soil?

WTF?!!!

Rofl. When was that, then? About the same time they were refusing to ban slavery?

Whoa Explain this to me please, I don't recall what we did Illigal, and I don't recall the US Steeling Resources, please provide some links/proof. I would really like to hear more about this 'if' its true that is, now I stay away from Politics, however there is a lot I could say about the War, the US, etc... But I don't want to stray from the topic at hand.

My guess is that Apple pulls iTunes from France before they open it up to other music players. I don't think Steve is going to be bullied. So Apple pulls the plug on iTMS France and the message is sent to other countries: We do business on our terms or pull the plug and your people go back to illegal downloads... you pick!

So the upshot of the article is: "Apple might someday become a big predatory monopoly, so we should pass laws to punish them now, just in case."

That's like a loan shark saying "you might refuse to pay up, so we're going to break your legs in advance."
