For those who have a 2011 Macbook Pro and had or may still have Snow Leopard what kind of battery did you get in the beginning at best?

I'm asking as my wife's 2011 Macbook Pro 17" on Snow Leopard use to get between 7-8 hours. Now on Mavericks she gets around 4.0 to 5 hours.

Now mind you she has 89% of her battery's mAH battery life still left as she doesn't use the laptop too often. It just seems like Snow Leopard had better battery life then Mavericks let alone Yosemite from what I can see.

I have Yosemite on my early-2011 15" and it lasts about 6 hours under regular usage (web browsing, Preview, Pages and iTunes open), with the dGPU disabled.

On my early 2011 15", after a fully charged battery I have about 4 1/2 hours of battery on Yosemite and normal usage (safari, MS Office, iTunes, etc). Sounds about the same as your wife's 2011 17".

I have the early 2011 17 and ya it does seem to be about right. I'm thinking about getting an ssd for it soon. That may help quite a bit.

Early 2011 15" here. In the beginning on SL I got 7-8 hours just like your wife's machine. 8 hours if I was really conservative with brightness and backlight and didn't do anything but the most basic tasks.

Nowadays, I rarely use my machine on battery power long enough to properly test it, but I'm quite sure I can't get it much over 5 hours on Yosemite. I'm in the high 80s for battery health.

It might actually be interesting to do a test of it sometime…

Some of the decrease in the battery performance may be due not to the OS (Yosemite vs. SL) but the age of the battery. If you're comparing how long the same battery lasts between 2011 and and 2015, then its may not be just the OS

I think it's still related to the OS, because I replaced my early-2011's battery sometime back, and now with a health of 96.4% (max charge of 6653 mAh out of the design capacity of 6900), it can only last for 5.5-6 hours under Yosemite, but lasted about 6.5-7 under SL.

Most of the loss of battery life is due to age, they are consumable parts and eventually die 4-5 years is about the average life expectancy of the best laptop batteries around so yours is doing well.
