Can we get a Digg over here to run salt in the wound of Dell? :P

hmn. so you pay 200 extra bucks for the apple's case design and the annoying touch-sensitive buttons...and no on screen controls.

and of course no dell rebates. which can be considerable....

interesting. at least apple isn't charging more for a flat-out inferior display...that's good news.

Seriously. "Hah! Our previously inferior product is now equal to yours! Take that, Dell!"

RDF, anyone?

The Dell 30" display was on sale for one day last week, it was $1499 Cdn (or roughly $1200 USD). If I only had a video card capable of driving it, I would have bought one.

Yup. Here in Norway the Apple-version is almost 28% more expensive than the Dell. And the Dell even looks good.

Only 300 duckets. I'll take an aluminum display over plastic anyday, but then again, I don't need all the inputs etc that come with the Dell. Well that, and it's ugly.

yep, works of art always cost more.

I actually noticed this a few days ago... maybe even over a week ago. I was comparing the MBP screen to the ACDs, and was kinda surprised to learn that the 30" had such high specs, but I just figured it had always been that way and I didn't know.

Upgrades are always good. Someday I will have a machine (and wallet) that can run the 30" display .

Not breaking news

A month ago (Feb 25th) I pretty much on-impulse went to the Apple Store and purchased a 30" Cinema. It is replacing the dual 20" Cinemas I was using prior. Right after the purchase I did a specs search and saw the 700:1 contrast and was pleased to see it was superior to the 17" and 20" units.

So this is not a brand new change.

The unit I have was manufactured in mid January of this year. I am not sure just when they made that switch, but looking at the screen the blacks do seem darker than the blacks of the 20" units I was using. (Granted, they were the older, plastic bezel models, not the most recent Cinemas made.)

Sadly, archive.org's most recent cache of that page is April 01, 2005, and Google's cache of the specs page is too recent - March 22nd this year. I wonder when it did turn around?

Yes, some people prefer to pay more for STYLE. Some people care how their stuff looks. People with taste & class (read: "non Dell-users").

Very nice setup. Couple of questions:

Where did you get that iSight stand?

What type of mouse is that?

Oh, and I use floppies and old CDs (usually crappy AOL promo CDs) as coasters too, they are nice!

Better make sure you're getting the right one then. Might be that the older stock is shipping 24hrs. and the updated ones are the same time out as the Dells.

I'd make 5x sure with the Apple rep that you're getting what's advertised on the site and if not that you can return it for full refund.

Hmm

Just thinking I hope that this is not the only update around this time, can you imagine it, marking a 30th birthday with a specification improvement

Also, who judges style from the back

I noticed the display my university recently bought (either 20" or 23") had "Apple HD Display" written on the back, whereas mine says "Apple Cinema Display" - is this new?

they got to update the MBP then. "As bright as our cinema displays..."
I don't like Dell'd design, but I do like multiple inputs. That's very nice when you 2 or 3 computers/laptops on the same desk.

The Dell 30" doesn't have an on screen display either.

This is why I don't like silent updates. It makes it hard for the consumer to know what they're getting.
