as classic as the mac boot-up sound is, (it's been with us since the '80s hasn't it?), i was wondering if i could change it to something i made. (i put the introduction part of 'In-a-gadda-da-vida' by Iron Butterfly into it's own file.)

Just so you know, it has changed since the 80's. The one still on Macs now though appeared sometime in the 90's around the time of the first PowerMacs I believe. Download MacTrackerit's got every old Mac model listed, and includes the boot sounds for most of them!
As for the sound itself, yes, it's stored in the firmware (not anywhere on the HD) and thus you can't change it.
I guess, but... good God. That's like... I dunno. I'm hard pressed to think of a good analogy. That's like getting heart surgery for cosmetic reasons, or something. 'Cause you don't like how your lub-dub sounds.
