linux kernel running on ipod

kick ass, i love linux, and on an iPod .... sweeeet....

iPod functionality

It is becoming obvious that the iPod is over-powered for a seemingly simple MP3 player. This Linux project seems like a good way to show off the iPod's potential. Hopefully it will not be too long before all the features of the iPod are supported by this. I imagine that FireWire support will be one of the first and most important features for it. For example, one day DV cameras could be able to dump their footage directly into an iPod. Currently this would be novelty but as the capacities of iPods increase, so will their functionality.

I ran a 32 track ProTools session from an iPod yesterday, complete with QT video window...

I'm sure your not supposed to do that, but I was bored🙂

What's the point?

Why would you want to run Linux on your iPod?

I just don't see the point. Yes, it has a neatness value as a hack, but I'd rather have it playing MP3s for me.

Sounds more like you were using it as a harddrive. Sarcasm abounds here I think.

because, as you said, it's neat. no need to spoil everyone else's fun, eh?
 
but what's the point? how are you supposed to input anything, there aren't keys! yeah, i'm going to use 4 buttons and a dial to write a letter.

sure it's a neat hack, but there's cell phones and whatnot that can handle linux too. doesn't mean it's useful.
 
Why Linux on iPod?

Well, the iPod is not completely devoid of keys; a jog wheel and some keys exist on its front side. With Linux installed and connected to another computer via FireWire the iPod could be remote controlled just like any networked computer. It could also be made to run applications and I am sure many people would like to see games other than Pong running on it (just do not hold your breath for Quake). Finally, you could get make it run video using some black & white variation of MP4.
