Didn't there used to be an option to set how many times the blue menu item highlighter blinks when you select something from a pull down menu? I can't remember if this was in Panther or OS 9....
 
It was configurable in old Mac OS. For OS X, Apple decided that everyone wanted it to blink exactly once 😛
