iPod Best way to delete everything off your iPod?

I'm curious what is the best way to delete everything from your iPod's hard drive? Best as in not fragmenting the drive and just cleaning it off as it was when you first bought it. Is the best way to reformat?
 
simply use the restore feature in the iPod Software Updater. easiest and probably the best method of not hurting the drive at all.
