What's Next... iPod Updates?

5GB iPod supplies have been absent since January. Apple has been reporting that this is due to "high holiday demand".

Most recent hints have indicated that iPod updates are imminent... however, only preliminary info has been available. Hints of upgrades continue to trickle in... but again, nothing definitive.

New Toshiba drives seem to be the likely candidates for upgrades to the iPod line. iPods were last refreshed by Apple in July 2002 at MacWorld Expo New York with the introduction of the 20GB iPod.

How long does Apple expect us to believe that "high holiday demand" is still affecting their iPod supply?
Also, Macwhispers says that new iPods are "very likely" this week.

I REALLY hope we see updates soon.

I don't expect to see many feature upgrades, I hope Apple focuses on fixing some of the problems with the current model such as the battery life issue.

My predictions:
- Price Drops
- Larger HD sizes
- Firmware update (ACC?)

I hope:
- Mic. in
- User Replaceable battery
- Bluetooth/Airport support of some type
- FM tuner

I'll just keep my fingers crossed, anyone think this is going to be happening tomorrow?

Question Some Apple Stores are down...

For what it's worth, some of the Apple stores are down for updating.

The rest will probably be down shortly.

I guess we find out in a hour or so what is up.

This could also be an indication that Apple wants to make sure we don't expect everything to be on a Tuesday either.

wow! a somewhat surprise product update. maybe not so, since raid xserves were expected. i don't really count macwhispers predictions as anything credible...

it seems early for the uk store to go down, unless one team does them all sequentially.... we'll see in a few hours i gues...

Apple site down...

Well, the US one and the Dutch ARE in fact down - I posted earlier that they were up. My bad. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Still - if I could get a 10Gb iPod at $250, and a 20 at $350, I'd jump. Even without updates (bluetooth, mic in, flux capacitor, etc)

I *would* like it to play OGG, but that's a QT issue...

The European stores have been known to go down a half hour or so before the US store when new/updated products are being announced.

This was true for last weeks iMac updates.

Nah, it isn't. When the PowerMac updates were done a couple of weeks ago, this is about the time they were happening. The store was back up before 6 AM Pacific (Cupertino) time and taking orders.

im wondering what the pricing scheme will be, we'eve seen about every new release so far get about a 200 dollar price break and bumped specs. maybe we'll get lucky and see the 5gb, 20gb and 40gb ipod lineup.

my prediction

5gb - 125-150
20gb - 250-300
40gb - 400

as for connection i wonder if they'll go firewire 800 , i kinda hope not cuz i dont have firewire 800 jsut 400 and dont know if the adapter does 800 connection to 400 connection.

Given everything that has been said, I highky doubt there will be a 5GB model. Probably there will be 10, 20 and 40GB Units.

I agree... they haven't even produced 5 GB iPods after Christmas anymore...
IMO NO FW800 either... they still have products that don't support it.

Ya no FW 800 considering the new iMacs didn't even support it. Plus it would cost alot in the short term to supply the addapter when the majority of people can't use it.

Probably that at the longest. It seems they're back up by 6 AM Pacific (9 AM Eastern) with these unnanounced updates.

OGG is possible on the Mac, just not on the iPod yet.

But it's no official part of QuickTime, therefore they will most likely not include it... maybe AAC, but I doubt that, too...
I'm predicting new models, but no new SW.
