Shouldn't we focus on changing the corruption in Chicago first. Maybe get a new mayor, fix the CTA, rebuild the south and west sides. Where are the rallies for that? That said, I may see you there.

I gotta admit, I thought that people were being murdered in Chicago based on their ethnic identity. "Genocide in Chicago" just rang a bit strange with me. Having said that, raising awareness about the terrible situation in Darfur is a good thing, so I wish you all the best.

Just a suggestion: it might be better to use a more descriptive title, like "Chicago rally to stop Darfur genocide" or something like that, since the title of " stop genocide in chicago" implies that Chicago has an issue with genocide. Of course, if it does, I'm all for stopping it, but I think a more descriptive title might bring in more viewers who would want to attend.

I don't know...Chicago is so far away...I can't really identify with the citizens...besides all those Illinoise are prone to violence, so it's useless...we might lose some of our patriotic "red state" sons...and I don't believe there is any oil there...sorry, American Idol is on...

Erm, maybe I'm ignorant, and I know there's a large population of violent people in the Chicago area, but what's all of this genocide talk about? And if you go to a protest on genocide, how do you know the whole ralley won't get mowed down?

Just saw this come across my Google news:
Quote:
Five members of Congress, including Rep. Tom Lantos (D-San Mateo) were arrested today when they blocked the front entrance at the Embassy of Sudan in Washington, D.C. Their protest and civil disobedience was designed to embarrass the military dictatorship's ongoing genocide of its non-Arab citizens.

All told, 11 people were arrested outside the Sudanese embassy on Massachusetts Avenue, including six activists as well as representatives Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston), Jim McGovern (D-Worcester, Mass.), Jim Moran (D-Virginia) and John Olver (D-Massachusetts). They were held in a jail cell for about 45 minutes and then released.

he's been mayor since 1989. he's been re-elected 4 times, so he's in his 5th term.

though he occasionally does something to piss me off (meigs field, soldier field), i think he's a rather good mayor. his two main deals are gun control and civic improvement. though i feel the north side (where i live) gets more attention than other parts of the city, i do see improvement all around.

and while the CTA does need more funding, that's not a function of the city government, but rather the RTA (regional transport authority). the city is constantly fighting for more funding, and indeed there are ongoing line and station improvements.

hey, nothing's been proven. :-)

i'm undecided about the corruption issue. there certainly is some corruption within the city government, and on one hand i have to think daley is aware of it. on the other, i think he's also smart enough to know how to insulate himself. but who knows, until there's a case laid out.

it is somewhat remarkable to me that, for one party to be in such complete control for so long, the government not only functions, but functions reasonably well.

i heard on the radio that the immigration rally drew 400,000 -- that's the police estimate. i reckon that overshadowed the darfur rally.

Yup...

Apparently illegal immigrants are a bigger concern than mass genocide.

maybe because those killed in sudan had trouble making it to chicago.

That's a pretty dishonest statement. It might be true if we had millions of Sudanese refugees here who decided not to hold a rally, but we don't.

Immigration is a big deal because we are a nation of immigrants - and they took to the streets.

**edit**zimv20 with the quickness...
