DVD to disk image

iDVD creates a disk image from digital video files (like from iMovie or Quicktime). Doesn't help with DVD ripping (unless you use Macthripper then use Handbrake to make the video file then use iDVD to create an image).
probably best to just use Mactheripper to get the Video_TS file and keep that on the hard drive. (and yes, in the USA even if you own the DVD, the legality of this process is at best debatable).

Just as well you could use MTR and then Roxio's Popcorn to convert it to a disc image. Generally if I back up a movie, I use this comination to rip it back to disc.
For instance, my girlfrien'd mother borrowed a dual-disc DVD set one time, gave it back then moved with one of the discs being lost in the move. We got the movie from netflix and I ripped the disc and now the set is complete again.
Very handy tools.
how to fix audio problem with mac the ripper
I had the same problem with getting no audio with mac the ripper. I'd take the vob file and run it trough DiVa and no audio.
So i downloaded "HANDBRAKE" instead , (it's free) and it was great. it ripped a dvd i put into my computer and turned it into a mpg4 file with audio all in one shot no problems. so i did not use mac the ripper at all. Just download HANDBRAKE. It takes a little longer to rip then mac the ripper but at least there is audio and on top of that you don't then have to use DiVA to convert any VOB file as Handbrake rips it and turns it right into a mpg4 file that quicktime reads and you can transfer to imovie just by dragging the mpg4 to a pane in imovie. Only thing is , is that it has to be less then 9 minutes of mpg4 for i movie to accept it. So if you need more then 9 minutes to put into imovie you will have to upgrade to quicktime PRO which can then break your entire mpeg4 file (that Handbrake ripped you) into segments of time that you can then drag to imovie.

Also let me add that you still don't have to upgrade to quicktime PRO as HANDBRAKE will let you turn chapters of your DVD into seperate mpg4 files. So as long as the chapters are under 9 minutes you don't need to upgrade to Quicktime PRO. Also Handbrake tells you how many minutes the chapters are that you want to rip.

roxio's popcorn will do what you want.
1. you can burn the dvd to another dvd
2. you can save the dvd as a disc image on your hard disk or external drive
3. you can take individual videos off the dvd and conver to compressed mpeg4 or divx
any of those are good options from popcorn.
