Eos 30d

As a very happy owner of a now ancient (in technology years) 10D (The 30D's grandfather?), my short answer would be yes.

However, your needs and reason for buying it are unique so I'd recommend that:

a) You post some more information about why you're buying the camera, what you'll be using it for, etc. - i.e. If you're looking for a point-and-shoot (It doesn't sound like you are, but who knows) maybe a 30D is overkill
b) You visit sites like http://www.dpreview.com, http://www.steves-digicams.com, etc. for more information. I use the former as my primary source of information but have found that the people who post on the forums are very particular sometimes (Most likely because they're professionals)

My mum bought the 5D, unsure how they relate as i know absolutely nothing about camera's but she reckons its the dog danglies, and the picture quality is outstanding

On paper, I'd agree that the 5D *is*, as you said, the dog's danglies... It definately looks like its a better camera than the 30D (I say looks like because I've only briefly played around with a 30D in a shop so I'm really no authority on the real-life differences between the two).

However... The last time I checked, it cost around $3,000 (+/- x hundred dollars) compared to the 30D's $1,400. Additionally, the 5D doesn't have a built-in flash... Now, while any professional or serious amateur will often tell you that built-in flashes are generally not great and should, if possible, be avoided in favor of a hot-shoe-mounted flash, a built-in flash can, IMO, be useful in certain situations...

If you are buying the 5D be-prepared to spend several grand on lenses also (unless you've already got several Canon L lenses). It's resolution and noise levels are so good it will show all the imperfections your lenses have.

I have had a 30D now about 2 months and I love it. I still had to buy an L glass as it also showed that my existing lenses were not so good.

she did spend a few quid on a number of lenses, one which she reckoned cost more than the camera itself, great big grey thing about 10" in length with a funny hook on it😕

but i have no idea how much she spent

There are a lot of Canon lenses that cost way above $3k. She probably got one of the super telephoto ones, great for shooting wild life (unless you want to joing the ranks of paparazzi). The hook is how you'd attach it to a tripod, as it weighs probably about 3-4x more than the camera you cannot mount the camera to the tripod with that thing attached to it.

Anyhow, you do not have to buy a lens that costs more than the 5D, but you need to get a decent walkaround lens to go with it. Something like the 24-70mm f/2.8L, or if you like wide angle 16-35 f/2.8L (or if you do not mind the slow speed 17-40 f/4.0L). I bought the 24-105 f/4.0L as a walkaround lens.

You may also find these fora helpfull as there are a lot of people asking the same questions like you. But If I were to chose, I'd order without the kit lens from B&H Photo, or any one of the reputable onilne stores, including Amazon, Dell, Costco...
