There used to be a cap of 24,000 songs awhile back (before iTMS existed), but I think that was lifted. I'm aware of people with over 25,000 songs, and rumors of people with 50,000+.
You're likely just limited by your storage capacity.
Edit: This site contains a post by a user who ran into a ceiling at 32,000...but that was over three years ago...I'd bet the ceiling's been raised, if not eliminated by now. MacRumors article on this.
Edit #2: Apple support document showing how to get around the 32,000 limit in iTunes. It specifically mentions that iTunes 4 no longer has this limitation.
There was a limit (32.000 I think, but might be wrong) in early versions of iTunes, but that has been fixed... if there's still a limit I guess it's purely academic... 😉
Edit: Slow and partially wrong... d**n that distracting TV... 😉
BTW, why not upgrade to the newest version of iTunes? I've been using 6.0.4 for a while now...

From this I take it that iTunes 6 either has no limit or such a crazy high number that no one in their right mind will ever reach it! (...yet!) I'm guessing there still is a limit somewhere though, just very high. So sorry, no exact number!
yeah, and even in one of the threads here 'who has the largest itunes library' someone has over 150,000. which, I don't know why you would want to find britney spears through all that clutter, but ... whatev...😛
