How to turn off welcome sound when switching on the computer

I imagine there's a very simple answer to this, I just haven't been able to find it yet! Any help is very much appreciated.

Mute your volume before shutting down.

I have a flat panel monitor with speakers, and my comp is plugged into the speakers and the DVI connection. I haven't heard the startup tone in ages, as the speakers don't kick in until the monitor gets a DV signal. So there's a $150 or so option. 😀
