Does anybody know of any programs available that can effectively remove vocals from a song?

Welcome to Mac Rumors.
Your first lesson is: Search the forums, we have covered this numerous times

The short answer: There are some programs and plugins that will do combinations of centre cancelling and frequency cutting, which kinda works on some types of material, but none will do a 100% job.

Easy. Just like extracting the egg from a cake. :p

Cool Edit Pro (now Adobe Audition) had an option called "Vocal Cut" which pretty much did what is written on the can. However, results will vary depending on your source material and how it's mixed.

The 'song' product we have on the CD is a mixed down version of perhaps 20-30 channels into a stereo (2-channel) mix. You cannot remove an individual vocals. It's sort of like asking can I remove the hi-hat cymbal from a finished song?

There are some EQ filters that can take out the frequencies of the human voice. I think this is what Cool Edit does. But you loose other parts of the song with that as well.

You can find karaoke versions of songs out there which are mixed from the record label without vocals. Try to find those, perhaps?

No, Cool Edit uses channel invert and mixes different channels over each other, thereby eliminating all sounds that are shared between both stereo channels. Well, it's a bit more complex of course. This approach works best with old tracks were the vocals were in the center while the music was mixed to the "outer" channels.
