I wonder how much of a role the Apache Harmony project played in that decision. I think that them completely open sourcing the JRE will never happen, since an organization still needs to drive the JCR process...

Anwyays, the good news is that someday (hopefully soon), the JRE won't lag behind in OS X as it has been in the past.
