iMovie 3.0.2 Update

iMovie 3 arrived with the iLife package a couple of weeks ago.

Reviews have been mixed, with many users displeased with the performance.

Apple appears to be aware, and will be issuing an iMovie 3.0.2 update to address this.

The only things I have problems with are the Ken Burns effect (motion isn't very smooth) and some of the titles and credits (they don't show up right at all)

iMovie is a great app, especially for those with tons of digital photos. I don't have a dv movie cameral, so the ken burns effect does wonders for me.

Keep up the good work Apple, and keep on ironing out the bugs...

Hmm

I don't have ilife yet, but I do have imove 3. It seems okay, but I wouldn't pay 50$ for it.

A lot of people over on the Apple forums have been complaining that the performance of iMovie 3 is terrible. Constantly spinning beachball cursors on dual processor machines and the like. I haven't tried it yet on my lowly iBook 800, but it sounds like it's definitely not an isolated case.

3.0.1 has been fine on my g3 imac. i hope that 3.0.2 is a patch of some kind, rather than another 80 meg download.

I have over 1100 songs in itunes, and imovie 3.0.1 is REALLY laggy, is this because of how many songs I have or my 733MHZ g4?

iMovie 3.0.1 performance

A lot of people are comparing the performance of iMovie 3 to iMovie 2. I have tried iMobie 3 on 3 different machines: g3-400, g4-450,g4 DP-1gHZ

I can say that the g3-400.. iMovie 3 is unusable it is to slow. iMovie 2 ran fine on this machine before.

g4-450 iMovie 3 ran decently, but still took long pauses to render, move, and generally function around in. The big flaw was importing old iMovie 2 movies, it would garble all the audio tracks makes loud whinning screeching noises.

g4 DP-1ghz: iMovie 3 ran alright.. still takes long to render the ken burns effect. same problems with importing imovie 2 movies (noise). in general, I would have expected on a dual processor machien for iMovie 3 to whiz... not so.. still clunky.

The biggest problem facing iMovie is the in abilitiy to turn off the ken burns effect! if this could be disabled i am sure it would make a lot of other users happier.

There's a fix for this by editing its XML plist(?) file. Go look at Apple's discussion forum for iMovie; it's mentioned in a few threads there.

imovie problems and itunes

itunes should have more than a 32k cap, because i have about 600 cd's to decode. the only reason i havent started is because i am only half way to having enough for a 500gb external(currently 1300 canadian, oh yes im a good old canadian). and i have friends with many cd's i want to decode...so if that is the case, and i pass 32000 i will switch players, or make a patch for it. or make my own player hosted by a browser, which is very simple.
about imovie. i was testing it out, becuase i use fcp3 and i wanted to see if i could use it for simple projects. and i discovered that it was a fine program for simple projects, and i never encountered any problems. maybe im just lucky.

THE NEW iMOVIE

SUCKS!

I am an avid user of iMovie. Its not as smooth as iMovie 1 and or 2. Its jumpy on a 1GHz, PowerBook which was purchased in December. It has a GIG of Ram, and 60 GB hd. Which should be ample to run the software. I'll tell you what apple is doing.

The new software is developed to work on the NEW machines. If the software does not see new hardware, I think its developed to not run as smoothly. It really bothered me to use the new iLife because of its lackluster performance, and it looked more PC like anyhow. Hope thats not the route they are taking. If so, Bye Bye my Apple Pie, took the chevy to the levy and tossed my powerbook. If thats the way apple wants to play, i aint gonna play no more!

iMovie problems

I am one who has had performance problems. I have a Quicksilver 867 with 896 MB of RAM and it takes quite a bit longer to load and work with than iMovie 2. I really enjoy the new features but it is very slow and choppy. One of the bigger problems is that it only recognizes about half of the songs in my iTunes playlist (and no particular pattern either). I have tried every tip and trick that has been mentioned with little success. I am eagerly anticipating the update from Apple as I'm currently working on a large project with iMovie 3 and any performance enhancements will be greatly appreciated.

I had to rebuild my entire iPhoto Library to get the photos to show up correctly in iMovie... Get this, halfway through building the library, I realized that iPhoto was inconsistently placing photos into date folders. Most of my folders fall into one folder despite the fact they were taken over the span of 3 years. Sorry folks, but iPhoto is broke too.

The only iTunes that show up in my iMovie are the tunes I imported after installing iMovie 3. No playlist, no other songs.

There are some serious issues with this iLife release. Give a shout out if anyone else has experienced similar issues.

Apple -- are you listening?

that's rather harsh dude. i mean, it sounds like a lot of people are having different levels of trouble. i wouldn't just make a blatant statement that it sucks, just because it didn't work well for you. i have heard a lot of people say, for instance, that XP is less stable than Win98--because they have old hardware. i had semi old hardware, and XP would last me a week of intense usage without a reboot and more. that's a lot better than any 98 i have seen... yet people just make these assertions based on limited experience. i would say rather--you have issues with it. apple needs to address it. but they haven't "screwed it up," nor are they going to. don't be cynical about apple!

Re: imovie problems and itunes

Doing simple math just ripping 600 cds will not even get you close to the 32,000 song limit. Let's be really generous and say each cd has 25 songs. and you would only have 15,000. You wouldn't even be half way. Also most CDs have more like 12 so you would even have more room. I wouldn't worry about it. Anyway, if worse case scenerio just put in the first 32,000 songs move the music library file put in another 32,000 and do the same thing. Then make a script or something to change the music library files (actually there are already some that can do that if you look on Versiontracker.)

Angry

I used imove3 for the first time last. I think all of the new effects a great however playing back clipps from the shelf and story line is so choppy and slow I can't assess my work. I'm working with an ibook with 500mh, 384ram, and 10gig. The end result was ok but the process was frusterating. If 3.0.2 does not fix this I'll trash 3 and reinstal 2.

can you guys move the iTunes discussion over here? we have discussed this pretty extensively there and it's right behind this item on the news page.

Angry iMovie 3 as a reason to go to FCE?

Maybe it's intentionally bad - all the more reason to upgrade to Final Cut Express?? I have a spanking new 1GHz iMac, and iMovie 3 just isn't cutting it. iMovie 2 on my iBook runs a lot smoother, and doesn't crash. Yesterday alone, iMovie 3 crashed half a dozen times just doing simple things like speeding up video speed and muting the volume. I don't WANT to have to save a project after every single edit.

However, the feature-set of iMovie 3 is impressive. I love the Ken Burns effect, even if it is a bit jerky. I figure the jerkiness is just mimicking a real-life camera.

Has anyone tried out FCE yet? Is it leaps and bounds beyond iMovie 3? I haven't yet found anything I want to do that can't be done with iMovie.

iMovie 3 is free.

You pay $50 for iDVD3.

Well worth the price IMO, for the tight integration between the 4 iApps that iLife brings.
