Someone please help me before I toss this thing! It's been freezing for no reason lately. Everytime I try to tranfer a file from my ipod or firewire drive I get a beachball that doesn't stop. I just tried to close a window and got a beachball. The drive has been making weird noises(popping/clicking/grinding) lately could that be the problem? I just did a clean install and still having problems.

If that doesn't work it is time to use your applecare and get a new HD in that baby

Or, you can give me your PowerBook- I will be glad to take it off of your hands, rather than just let you toss it out the window. ;) :D

Sorry to say it, dan-o-mac, but that's definitely a dying hard drive. Same thing happened to me. It sucked.

Oh well, it could be worse. So where's the best place to get a new drive? Is it an easy install or should I go to a pro?

Toss the laptop to me, I need another laptop for college.

I seen this problem before. If you can, get a firewire hard drive and see if it does the same thing or get someone {mac} laptop, boot into firewire target disk drive and boot from their hard drive.

Out of interest, can the OP use any SATA 2.5 inch drive, or is OSX a little fussy which drives it uses?

Since it is a PowerBook G4, it needs to use a ATA not a SATA HDD.
Apple only started using SATA HDDs in their laptops when they released the MacBook Pro.

A right...so can he use any brand and any make? I remember when I upgraded my emac's CD Burner, i could only use a specific model from OWC...I just wondered if Hard Drives were the same, or if they are entirely free from the "mac specialist" situation?

Re: About to toss My 12" powerbook out the window!

May I suggest filming this destruction, or letting David Letterman toss it off the roof for you.

The drive is dead/dying you might as well throw it all away.

First of all thanks for all your help. You guys rock!

MacBoyX- I purchased the powerbook used, I'm not sure if I have applecare. How do I go about checking?

dmw007- Thanks for the links. I'm going to purchase this Samsung 120GB Drive http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822152032

xparaparafreakx- You say you've seen this problem before, is it indeed a drive problem? I do have a firewire drive but have a bunch of files and no way of backing them up. Can I install os x without deleting these files? My girlfriend has an iBook, but i'm not sure how to boot into firewire target disk drive and boot from her hard drive.

No problem, and that looks like a good HDD, although I would personally buy a 7,200 rpm one for the added performance. I am pretty sure that you can use any style/make of HDD- I don't think you must buy one that is "Apple Certified". But I could be wrong.....

Yeah I'm still on the fence as far as a faster drive. I might do a 7,200 rpm 100GB

I don't think you can get a 7200 RPM 120 GB drive. I just purchased a 160 GB drive from Newegg for my 12" PB. I installed it last night without a hitch. Follow the instructions at http://www.pbfixit.com. Easy! :)

Yeah I noticed that, check the post above yours.:D Thanks for the fixit link, I can't wait to get to work!
