How do you make a program the default?

Hey first post! been reading these boards for a few months but could do with some help!

Ive reinstalled os x today because things seemed to be geting very slow but anway i want all of my video files to open in vlc automaticly but i dont know how to do this?

Find an example of each of the file types you want to open in VLC by default. Use cmd-I (File -> Get Info) and under Open with: choose VLS, then hit the Change All button and confirm.
