how to put icons on desktop???

how do i put icons on the desktop??? when i drag it up it just either vanishes in a puff of smoke or goes back down to dock

You can right click on the thing you want on the desktop, then create an alias and drag that to the desktop.

but you have to do it from the applications folder not the dock, you then create an alias (through right-click or Command-L) and move this to the desktop.

You might also like to add your applications folder to the dock as that will enable you to access all your applications from the dock in a similar way to the windows start menu.

If you hold COMMAND (key with the Apple logo) as you click an icon on the Dock, it'll take you to the icon's location in Finder. This might help if you don't keep all your apps in the same place and have forgotten where they might be.

I'm assuming you're a Windows->Mac switcher, yes?

Try using just the dock for a while. I used Windows forever, and once I switched to the Mac I found the dock much more easy to use.

keeping icons on the desktop is so... Windows!

Apple+L will make an alias of the selected app. You can then put it where you want.

Or just drag any app into the dock to put an alias there.
