Do stand alone tv dvd recorders work as a Mac DVD-R?

Do stand alone tv dvd recorders work as a Mac DVD-R? Meaning, can I use the IEEE 1394 firewire input on the unit as an external Mac DVD-R drive to burn data dvds?

e.g. set top boxes like this one:

It's extremely unlikely... the firewire input will be for video cameras....

Heh.. thought I would share this interesting tidbit - there's a way to trick it into recording the video. It goes something like this - plug in a second firewire video device. For example, if you hook up both your camcorder and the DVD stand-alone, you'll get the video on the stand-alone, in digital quality!

This obviously doesn't help if you're trying to burn a data DVD, but if you just want to dump some vid to DVD, it's pretty nice.
