Unix network programming

hey all
im just wondering if there's a difinitive guide for network programming on the web for unix. perhaps a small introduction to ip sniffing or scanning networks via unix. ive been scrolling through the man pages on networking, and have got myself thouroghly interested and at the same time very confused. can anyone help me out?

If you are interested in programming, start with Beej's Guide.

You really need to get yourself a copy of "Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment" and/or "TCP/IP Illustrated" (at least Vol. 1). Both are by Richard Stevens and are the definitive works on the subject.

Others prefer the "Internetworking with TCP/IP" by Doug Comer. But I've always found that the Stevens books have more detail and have better explainations.
